The
Down-to-Earth Guide to Global Warming
Authors: Laurie David and Cambria Gordon
Publisher: Scholastic
Product: Book (128 pages)
Cost: $19.99
Ages: 9 to 12
Nice try for the authors who clearly care about the planet, but Canadians
reading the book will be astounded by this sentence: “Hungry
polar bears have been spotted in Halifax and Ontario, Canada, foraging
for food in people’s garbage cans.” Uh, no. Polar bears
would not move farther south to Halifax, Nova Scotia looking for food.
And, polar bears live in northern Ontario. In fact, they can be hunted
there.
Other than that, this book works hard at getting readers to understand
the changing climate, and how they can be agents of change. In four
sections, the authors guide readers through the “whys”
of global warming, “how” the weather is different, the
“whys” and “wheres” of extinction, and the
“what” you can do to help. |

I am extremely concerned about global warming, so this was the perfect
book for me. But it would still be a great read, even if you aren’t
as environmentally minded.
The best part of the book was the 29 pages that say just about everything
you can do to help prevent global warming from getting worse. They
don’t just say the problems, they tell you the solutions.
I really liked the drawings! They were so funny. My favourites were
seeing Will Ferrell “deforested” (bald) and the Wicked
Witch of the West “melting” with the polar ice caps.
The only thing that I didn’t like as much was that the book
made global warming sound so real.
This book was the most amazing non-fiction book that I’ve
read in my life! It was interesting, funny, informative, exciting
and even a little scary. Out of 10, I give a score of 10, no question.
In one hyphenated word: Earth-shattering — if everyone in
the world read this book, it wouldn’t take long to solve the
global warming crisis.
