Medieval has a bad rep. Call something “medieval” and you probably mean it’s backward, low-tech, and primitive. In other words, “medieval” is code for ill informed or ignorant.

During the Middle Ages, medieval people had new ideas, created new inventions, and used technology to make life better. Without the Middle Ages, no Enlightenment — when science really took off — would have followed.
Let’s put it in perspective. People in the future might think we were even dumber than medieval folk: we knew we harmed the environment through our actions and we kept doing it; our choice of weapons went beyond swords to nuclear weapons that could wipe out the entire planet. Being dumb is relative.

Pick up our latest issue, and find out what life and science in the Middle Ages were really like!

On The Cover
Sure, medieval times in Europe could be a bit crazy what with plague-carrying fleas, no sewage system, and working super hot metal without safety equipment, but it was a time of great changes in technology and science. Except for astronomy. (You’ll have to read the theme section to find out more.)
