What do you do if you love science
and you want to encourage other girls to get interested too? Back in 1992,
then 13-year old Larissa Vingilis-Jaremko decided to start her own science
club for girls ages 7 to 16.
"I thought that there were a lot of girls who weren't
interested in science because they thought it was something for boys or
geeks or something that was just too hard," said Larissa. "They thought
it was completely out of reach. But really it's something that's fun, and
it's everywhere. Most jobs today have something to do with science. Even
being someone at the cash register at McDonald's, you have to know how to
use technology to punch the buttons. I think it's really important for girls
to be more interested in science."
Larissa called the club she started the Canadian
Association for Girls in Science or CAGIS. To get her first members, Larissa
sent application forms to all the girls who went to Discovery Western, a
kids' summer science camp in London, Ontario. Since then CAGIS has grown
tremendously; there are now CAGIS chapters in five provinces.
