Today we completed our second pool practice.
With her eight thrusters, the Nina Harper is a powerful
and responsive ROV to fly. She is very fun to pilot, with lots
of thrust and can turn on a dime. My favorite part is getting
close to a C-probe. I line up the probe in the monitor; turn
on the Sucker and presto! The C-probe is sucked in!
The biggest piloting challenge is descending
down the elevator shafts. This takes practice since we fly “blind”
down the shafts. The first couple of times I descended too fast
and got hung up in the frame. Easy does it! As pilot, I rely
on Beckie-Anne to manage the tether and give navigation instructions.
Our plan at the competition is to fly
down to the bottom deck and pick up 10 C-probes. Then we will
come up to the surface and unload. After, we will fly into the
top deck and retrieve the next 10 C-probes. In our practice
sessions we can pick up eight probes in five minutes. Our goal
is to pick up 10 C-probes in eight minutes.
