Is an electric eel really electric?

Here’s the real eel deal...the electric eel—found in rivers in South America—can emit an electrical charge which it uses to stun prey, discourage enemies, and signal other eels. Electric eels have been known to produce up to 650 volts of electricity which is enough to stun a person—or kill a small fish!
One of our readers told us an interesting aside about electric eels. At Christmas time, the Vancouver Aquarium has a special electric eel exhibit. When the eel is generating electricity, the current triggers a switch which, in turn, activates Christmas lights!
